Rhode Island woman crashes into liquor store

Police say the crash at Vickers' Liquors occurred as a result of the woman accidentally hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake.

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Police in Rhode Island say a woman in her 70’s crashed into a liquor store when she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

The Newport Daily News reports the driver slammed into a window at Vickers’ Liquors Thursday morning in Newport.

No one was injured in the crash.

Newport Deputy Fire Chief David Murphy says two panes of safety glass were broken but there was no structural damage.

General manager Elizabeth Moniz says she heard a loud bang and smelled an engine. Moniz says the crash was surreal.

The liquor store was opened shortly after car was towed from the scene.
