Firefighters had to rescue a ‘scared’ owl that got tangled in a soccer net — twice

“Firefighters are always there to protect us," Fitchburg Public Schools officials said in a Facebook post.

A frightened bird of prey was rescued in Fitchburg on Friday. Twice.

Fitchburg Public Schools and the town’s fire department shared photos of the “scared owl” that became tangled in a soccer net at the high school.

School groundskeeper Ray Bedard told the Fitchburg Sentinel and Enterprise the owl stretched its wings after being cut free from the netting by Fitchburg firefighters, only to run into more netting and require a second rescue.

Once it was freed by Fitchburg firefighters, it flew away “unharmed,” the district said.

“Firefighters are always there to protect us,” the school said.
