BELFAST, Maine (AP) — A Norwegian firm that wants to build a large salmon aquaculture farm in Maine says it is acquiring more land near the site of the project.
Nordic Aquafarms plans to build an inland salmon farm capable of producing more than 60 million pounds of fish per year in Belfast. It has called the project one of the largest of its kind. The firm also says it has entered into an agreement to purchase about 14 acres of land that adjoin the 40 acres it already has under contract.
Nordic Aquafarms says it’s acquiring the new land from local window manufacturer Mathews Brothers. The firm declined to disclose a purchase price. It says it is purchasing the land to enable larger buffers around the site.
