14 people confirmed to have contracted Legionnaires’ disease in N.H. beach town

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire health officials have ordered a Hampton beach hotel to take immediate steps to remove a potentially deadly bacteria from its water system.

Fourteen people have been confirmed as having contracted Legionnaires’ disease in Hampton at the end of July or beginning of August, including one person who died. The Department of Health and Human Services said Sunday it has ordered the Sands Resort to notify guests that the Legionella bacteria was found in multiple places within its water system, including the hot tub spa, and to take immediate steps to remediate the problem.

Legionnaire’s disease is a bacterial pneumonia spread by inhaling droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria.
