An elderly woman died after she was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Cambridge early Thursday afternoon while pushing a wheeled walker, law enforcement officials said.

The woman, 80, who authorities have not identified, was struck in the Cambridge Housing Authority building’s parking lot at 150 Erie St. before 12:30 p.m., according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that the operator of the vehicle fled the scene following the crash,” a press release from the office said. “An investigation into the vehicle and incident is active and ongoing.”

The woman, whose identity will be released once officials notify her next of kin, was brought to Cambridge Hospital where she was pronounced dead, the statement said.

Authorities were searching for a white Infinity SUV they believe may have been involved, Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick told Boston.com later Thursday afternoon.

The investigation is being carried out by the district attorney’s office, the Cambridge Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police, officials said.
