BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Authorities are creating a task force to investigate decades-old abuse at a Burlington orphanage.
Vermont State Attorney General T.J. Donovan plans to announce details of the task force Monday at the Burlington Police Department. The investigation follows a Buzzfeed News article last week about child abuse at Roman Catholic orphanages, including St. Joseph’s Orphanage, which closed in the 1970s. That article built on earlier reporting by the Burlington Free Press and included allegations of a boy being thrown from a window to his death, beatings by nuns, a girl forced to slap herself 50 times and children being locked in an attic.
The investigation was first reported by the news site Seven Days. A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Burlington said Friday officials there had not been contacted about it.
