West Yarmouth man shoots pit bull to death during attack, police say

The man and his girlfriend had recently begun fostering the dog.

A West Yarmouth man shot and killed a pit bull terrier he was fostering Sunday evening when the dog attacked him and wouldn’t stop, according to police.

Police were called to the man’s home on Woodbine Avenue in West Yarmouth around 6:08 p.m. There, they found the 25-year-old had “severe wounds to his left arm” and the pit bull dead.

Through an investigation, police found out that the man and his girlfriend had recently begun fostering the pit bull, who was named Max.

The couple was lying in bed with the dog when Max began repeatedly biting the man when he tried to move him, police said. After Max wouldn’t stop, the man pulled a 9mm handgun from a nightstand and fired a single shot at the dog, according to police. Max died soon afterward.

While the man is licensed to have guns, police took the 9mm handgun, plus a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition, from the home.

The man was brought to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis for treatment. Yarmouth police, with help from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit, is continuing to investigate what happened.
