2 dead in wrong-way crash on I-495

Three others were injured in the multi-vehicle crash.

A 38-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man, both from Lawrence, are dead after state police say the 2016 Kia Sportage the woman was driving on I-495 Wednesday crossed from the southbound side into northbound traffic and struck multiple vehicles, including the one the male victim was in.

Police were called to the crash just south of Exit 42A on the Andover and Lawrence municipal line at 11:52 a.m.

When the Kia first crossed onto the wrong side of the highway, it sideswiped a 2004 Ford F350; the 59-year-old man from Dracut who was driving that vehicle wasn’t injured.

The Kia then struck a 2003 Honda Pilot head on, police said. The 56-year-old male victim was a passenger in this vehicle; it was being driven by a 55-year-old woman, also of Lawrence, who was taken to Lawrence General Hospital with “serious injuries.”

The Kia then proceeded to strike a 2016 Toyota RAV4, police said. A 58-year-old woman, who was driving the SUV, and her 27-year-old female passenger, both from Andover, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and were also brought to Lawrence General Hospital.

The area of I-495 northbound was closed while officials responded to the scene. Traffic was detoured to I-93, then Route 213 back to I-495 until the highway reopened around 2:56 p.m., officials said.

State police, Andover fire and EMS, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the state Department of Transportation were all on scene.

The victims’ identities are not being released yet pending notification of family, police said.
