Mother killed, pregnant daughter injured in Lawrence pedestrian crash

The driver, a 22-year-old woman from Lawrence, has not been charged, according to police.

A 61-year-old mother was killed and her 35-year-old pregnant daughter injured Wednesday evening in Lawrence after they were both struck by a driver on Essex Street, police said.

A 22-year-old Lawrence woman hit the two pedestrians with her vehicle near the Hampshire Street intersection around 6:11 p.m., according to statements from Lawrence Police Det. Thomas Cuddy.

Both victims, who were not identified, were treated by paramedics at the scene, Cuddy said. The mother was later pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital.

Police said the daughter and her unborn child were in stable condition at a Boston hospital Thursday morning.

Authorities have not released specific details about the crash, but said the 22-year-old driver has not been charged and is cooperating with investigators.

“Any criminal charges will be determined following the results of an investigation being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Team. …. Drugs and Alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this tragic accident,” Cuddy said in a statement.
