20-year-old woman struck, killed on Massachusetts highway

Nyka Sanders, of Greenfield, was attempting to wave down passing vehicles when she was hit, according to police.

A 20-year-old Massachusetts woman was struck and killed while attempting to wave down passing vehicles on I-91 northbound in Greenfield Wednesday night, according to state police.

Police said an initial investigation revealed that Nyka Sanders, of Greenfield, had exited a vehicle and was walking on the highway near the 45.2 mile-marker around 9:50 p.m. when she was hit in a travel lane by a 2016 Honda Pilot being driven by a 43-year-old Turner Falls man.

Sanders succumbed to her injuries at the scene, police said.

“There was no other vehicle found on scene,” according to police. “The possibility of Ms. Sanders exiting a vehicle and the reason she was walking on the highway, is still under investigation.”

The Honda Pilot was also occupied by a 41-year-old woman and three children, none of whom were injured in the crash, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
