Commuter Rail passengers will no longer have to brave the elements while getting to and from the Orange and Green lines at North Station.

The station’s new underground pedestrian tunnel opened this weekend, connecting the Commuter Rail to the Orange and Green line platforms in time for a “busy” few days of winter weather.

Commuters arriving at North Station can reach the tunnel by heading toward the Legends Way stairs inside TD Garden. The tunnel ends by the MBTA’s ticket area.

“Very pleased to announce the opening of the North Station Pedestrian Passageway today and to welcome our first customers,” Steve Poftak, the MBTA’s new general manager, tweeted Sunday.

The tunnel is part of a $100 million renovation to TD Garden including a 50,000 square-foot expansion, new dining options, locker room upgrades, and more over the next two years.

About 50,000 people commute through North Station each day.
