A 28-year-old man and 23-year-old woman are dead following a crash on I-95 southbound in Attleboro early Thursday morning, according to state police.
The man, from Providence, was reportedly driving a 2018 Kia Soul. Police believe the vehicle was speeding and the driver — the only person in the vehicle — lost control before crashing into the back of a 2007 Hyundai GST, which had five people inside, around 1:25 a.m.
The female victim, who was from Los Angeles, was reportedly a passenger in the backseat of the Hyundai; those in the backseat were trapped, according to officials.
The man was brought to Rhode Island Hospital while the woman was brought to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. They were both pronounced dead.
Three of the people in the Hyundai — a 23-year-old man from Berwyn, Illinois; a 27-year-old man from Daly City, California; and a 23-year-old man from Providence — were all brought to nearby hospitals for related injuries.
Police are withholding the names of the victims pending notification of family.
Update: On Thursday afternoon, the Bristol District Attorney’s office identified the male victim as Sean St. Louis, 28, of Providence, and the female victim as Maryori Conde, 23, of Los Angeles.
The southbound side of the highway was closed for about three hours, and traffic was detoured off at Exit 3, police said. State police’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, state police detectives from Bristol County, and state police’s Crime Scene Services Section all responded to the scene.
