A Somerville man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly “threatening to strike passengers in the face with an elongated stick” on the eastbound platform of the MBTA’s Riverside Station around 6 a.m., according to a police release.

Witnesses said Richard Bothelo, 47, then entered a Green Line trolley and began to swing the stick at riders and scream profanities, according to transit officials.

“Botelho’s actions caused fear amongst his fellow riders as well as delayed the train at the start of rush hour,” police said.

Bothelo faces an assault by means of a dangerous weapon charge, according to the release.
