A ‘large piece of ice’ flew off a truck on I-495. A 6-year-old girl was sent to the hospital.

"She was a trooper."

A 6-year-old girl was sent to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries Thursday afternoon after ice flew off a tractor-trailer and into the windshield of her mom’s car.

State police received several calls around 1:45 p.m. reporting the incident on I-495 northbound in Andover, according to a release.

Amanda Grenier told Boston 25 News she was on her way home from Woburn with her daughter, Avery, after picking up Valentine’s Day gifts when the ice smashed through the windshield of her 2018 Toyota. Avery was in a car seat in the backseat, she said.

“My daughter was screaming and I had turned around quickly, seen she was bleeding and I just pulled over,” she said. “Luckily, she has no glass in her eyes, no glass stuck in her. She was a trooper.”

Grenier said the truck driver looked directly at her and continued driving.

“He seen I was going crazy, beeping, and he kept driving,” she said.

A witness called police to report the license plate of the truck, police say. The investigation is ongoing.
