Sex offender charged with kidnapping 2 girls in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with kidnapping two young girls in Cambridge.

Police say 52-year-old Lionel Brathwaite approached two sisters as they were walking near Central Square at around 5 p.m. on Feb. 13. They say he grabbed one of the girls by the arm and forced them to walk down several streets in the neighborhood.

Police say he apologized and let them go after they refused to go down an alley. Some of the interaction was caught on surveillance video police released Friday.

The department announced Saturday that officers had located Brathwaite in Central Square and arrested him. They say he’s homeless and a Level 3 sex offender, which means the state considers him a high risk for re-offending.
