Mass. man wanted in fatal New Bedford crash caught in Rhode Island

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man authorities say caused a fatal crash and then fled the scene has been apprehended in Rhode Island.

A spokeswoman for the Bristol district attorney says 21-year-old James Bennett-Werra was found at a home in Pawtucket on Saturday.

Authorities say Bennet-Werra was the driver of a car that ran a stop sign in New Bedford last Wednesday and crashed with another vehicle. An occupant of the other vehicle, 68-year-old Janet Murphy, died. By the time police arrived, Bennet-Werra was gone.

Police say he fled a traffic stop in Fairhaven just before the crash and had removed a court-ordered electronic monitoring device.

He faces several charges in the crash including motor vehicle homicide. He’s being held in Rhode Island pending rendition. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
