Man fell into Hyannis Harbor while trying to wash clothes, police say

He "appeared to be heavily intoxicated," authorities said.

A 57-year-old man was pulled from the frigid waters of Hyannis Harbor early Sunday after falling off a dock while trying to wash his clothes, authorities said.

Barnstable police received a call around 2 a.m. from a witness who reported seeing a man at the Ocean Street docks in Hyannis “stumbling around trying to do laundry in the harbor water,” officials said in a statement.

Upon arrival, officers found a pile of clothes on the dock and a Hyannis man, who was not identified, in the harbor with water up to his neck, police said. He was holding onto a floating pier.

“The man had spent several minutes attempting to yell for help,” police said. “(He) was conscious and breathing and appeared to be heavily intoxicated.”

The man told officers he was attempting to wash his clothes before he fell off the dock and landed in the water, according to officials.

He was brought to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment. No charges had been filed as of Sunday morning, police said.
