Both Marines were aircraft ordinance technicians with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, based in Beaufort.
Details about the investigation were scarce Monday. The investigation itself was ongoing.
The Portland Press Herald reports Wallingford came from a family of firefighters, and worked with the Standish Fire Department while still in high school.
