Vermont man accused of trying to arrange the rape of his girlfriend pleads guilty

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — A Brandon man accused of trying to arrange the rape of his girlfriend has pleaded guilty.

The Rutland Herald reports that 51-year-old Richard Renfrew pleaded guilty last week to attempting to procure someone to commit a felony and was given a deferred sentence.

Police say he contacted a Poultney man on Craigslist in 2017 and in a series of text messages said he wanted the man to sexually assault his girlfriend while he watched. Renfrew told police the messages were a fantasy he did not plan to act upon.

Neither Renfrew nor his attorney spoke at his sentencing hearing. Judge Thomas Zonay told Renfrew that his behavior was not only illegal but wrong, and urged him to get help.
