The Museum of Fine Arts said Friday it has banned two visitors who made racist comments to Dorchester middle school students last week, and pledged to change its protocols for front-line museum staff and guards.

The announcement comes in the wake of an uproar over a May 16 field trip of students from Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy. More than 90 percent of the Davis school’s 216 students are African-American or Latino. Students from the school had said they were subjected to racist comments and treatment from museum staff and some patrons during the trip.

In the internal investigation that followed, the museum re-created the group’s entire visit through security footage and spoken with dozens of people who interacted with the students.
