BOSTON (AP) — Police say a Boston emergency responder has been stabbed several times by a patient in an ambulance.

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross says the responder was taken to the hospital after the Wednesday afternoon stabbing. She is expected to survive.

Gross says officers arrested a suspect, who is expected to be arraigned Thursday.

Chief of Boston Emergency Medical Services James Hooley says the ambulance had been transporting an ‘‘emotionally disturbed’’ patient to the hospital when the person attacked the responder. Hooley says the driver pulled over, at which point the suspect also used pepper spray.

Gross says a second responder was taken to the hospital for treatment for exposure to the spray.

Hooley says the stabbed responder is a 14-year veteran of the agency.
