The driver operating the tow truck with a dog sitting on its open flatbed has been fired, the owner of Ramsay’s Towing confirmed.
Justin Ramsay also said the Animal Rescue League examined the dog after the incident, and the animal was deemed healthy.
“It’s been the toughest three days in the 30-year history of the company,” Ramsay said in a phone interview with Boston.com on Friday. He added that the company has tried “to respond to legitimate concerns.”
“And we’ve tried to be as proactive as possible,” he said.
A photo of the dog surfaced Wednesday. Ramsay estimated the Waltham-based company has received about 1,000 phone calls since then. He said the now-terminated employee hadn’t been with the company long.
“We were completely unaware that the dog was on the truck,” Ramsay said. The company found out about what happened after people began calling upon seeing the photo.
The company is “dog friendly,” he said.
“We will be pledging a donation to one of the local shelters for the dog, and we look forward to moving on,” Ramsay said.
We just caught up with the man who snapped this photo of a dog on the back of a tow truck. He recalled the moment he realized it was a real dog. He couldn’t believe his eyes especially because he was on the highway. Hear from him at 6. @wbz pic.twitter.com/srNUmF6t4a
