An accused child rapist who was on the Massachusetts State Police’s list of most wanted fugitives was captured in Illinois on Thursday, according to officials.
Zion Vazquez, 31, is a suspect in multiple sexual assaults against a child less than 10 years old, according to a news release from state police.
Leominster Police had a warrant for his arrest in 2013, the release said, but Vazquez fled when he discovered he was being investigated.
Anonymous tips about Vazquez began pouring in after he was added to the most wanted list last month. State troopers then tracked Vazquez to an abandoned house in Aurora, Illinois, where he was possibly working as a mechanic.
Officers from a U.S. Marshals Service task force surveilled the house and identified Vazquez around 2 p.m. Thursday. He is being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in St. Charles, Illinois.
Vazquez will be extradited to Worcester County where he faces child rape charges, according to the release.
