1 woman dead, another injured after fall at Rhode Island bar

The two women had stepped outside to have a cigarette before the incident, officials said.

A 31-year-old woman died and another was injured after the pair fell down concrete steps outside a Rhode Island bar Friday night.

The two women, who were not identified, apparently stepped outside the Hilltop Cafe at 23 Canal St. in Westerly to smoke cigarettes when they fell down the stairs leading to the bar’s basement stock room, The Providence Journal reports.

One of the women, a Westerly resident, was unconscious when authorities arrived, according to the newspaper. She was brought to Rhode Island Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The Rhode Island medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.

The other injured woman, also 31, from Mystic, Connecticut, got up and sought help after the fall, The Journal reports.

She was brought to Westerly Hospital for treatment and was released later that night, the newspaper said.
