Kayaker’s body found off Cape Cod; search suspended for missing companion

The Coast Guard suspended their search Saturday for 51-year old Marc-Oliver Czarnecki, who was reported with Madru on Friday night.

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say they have found the body of a woman while searching for a missing kayaker off the coast of Cape Cod.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s First District tweeted that a body matching the description of the woman reported missing was found at 6:30 a.m. Saturday along the shore in North Truro.

The Coast Guard said crews had been searching for 50-year old Carol Madru who was last seen in a red kayak Friday night and reported missing in the Provincetown area.

Madru was reportedly seen with 51-year-old Marc-Oliver Czarnecki. Crews had been searching for him for 16 hours, covering roughly 180 square miles, before calling it off around 3:40 p.m. Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release.

Czarnecki is still missing at this time.

Officials are asking anyone with information on the missing kayaker to call the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England at 508-457-3211.

In response to the incident, Karen Foss organized a GoFundMe page to support Madru’s family.

“She had just recently purchased her kayak, to give herself the chance to have a little ‘me time’ that nurses so rarely get,” Foss wrote in the fundraiser’s description. “Carole was a loving spouse, joyful mother, and amazing nurse; she was always ready to lend a hand and put others first.”
