Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner William Gross said at a Monday press conference that “dozens” of officers were treated at the scene. Both officials praised the hours of peaceful demonstrations that took place earlier in the day and condemned the violence and looting that followed after the protest concluded. More than 21 police vehicles were damaged in the chaos, and officials said in one instance gun shots were fired at officers.

“We applaud everyone who protested peacefully,” Gross said. “But unfortunately others came hellbent on destroying our city, our great city.”

Walsh said 18 bystanders were transported by Boston EMS with injuries to local hospitals.

Of the 53 arrests made, the police commissioner said 27 people were Boston residents, while 24 were from outside the city. In addition, two arrests and one summons were made for residents from out of state.

Gross said he was sharing the breakdown of non-Boston residents to break the “negative stereotypical view” that everyone causing destruction was from the city.

“That is not the case,” he said.

The unrest began around 9 p.m. on Sunday and followed after thousands gathered earlier in the day for peaceful protests in Boston against the death of George Floyd, the Black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis last week.
