86-year-old Malden woman killed by SUV that crashed through door of auto shop

An 86-year-old Malden woman died Monday after she was hit by an SUV that crashed through the door of an auto body shop, according to the Middlesex County district attorney’s office.

Athena Hartwell, a resident of an elderly housing facility nearby, was hit on Hunting Street near Salem Street at around 1:38 p.m. Police say the driver, a 28-year-old Malden man, crashed backwards through the garage and traveled across the street before hitting the woman on the sidewalk.

The victim was pronounced dead on scene, and the driver was brought to an area hospital. He was cited for driving with a suspended license. Police are investigating what caused the SUV to speed out of the auto shop.
