Head removed from statue at Waltham church

A statue of Christ outside of St. Charles Borromeo Chapel in Waltham was vandalized over the weekend, officials said.

Terrence Donilon, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston, said the statue is located on the lawn at 51 Hall St. and the vandalism most likely occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

“It was a statue of the Sacred Heart outside the church,” Donilon said in an email. He said the statue’s head and right hand were removed.

The Rev. Michael Nolan, the pastor at St. Charles, said in a phone interview that the church has been praying for whoever did this, and that he wants to work toward peace and forgiveness.

He said he hopes the person who did this comes forward so it can be determined if it was intentional.

“At this point we’re just hoping that if anything knows anything about it or if they’re responsible, they’ll just come forward,” he said.

Waltham police are investigating, Donilon said.

“No leads on that as of yet,” Detective Sergeant Stephen McCarthy said in an e-mail.

Correspondent Andrew Stanton contributed to this report.
