Tractor-trailer with two dogs in the cab – but no driver – crashes into Braintree house

"You can only surmise that the two dogs were in the front, maybe something got released, and they went for a ride."

When police responded to a tractor-trailer crash Saturday evening on River Street in Braintree, they found no driver present in the truck — only two chocolate Labrador retrievers, according to fire department reports.

The truck rolled down a hill before crashing into the side of the newly renovated house, neighbors told WCVB. The truck left tire marks in the grass where it had rolled down the hill.

None of the residents of the house were present during the crash, and no injuries were reported, according to the report. The dogs were not harmed during the crash.

Nearby resident Glenn Fillmore heard the crash approximately at 6 p.m. and rushed to check on the driver, only to find the seat vacant.

“You can only surmise that the two dogs were in the front, maybe something got released, and they went for a ride. That’s probably the best thing you can come up with,” Fillmore told WCVB.

“This is terrible. These people just moved into this house. It’s a brand-new house,” neighbor Bob Joyce told WCVB.

The gas and electric were disconnected by utilities and water was shut off, according to the fire department. The owner of the house was advised by a building inspector of the scope of the damage. Before pulling out the trailer tractor from the house, a shoring company was retained to secure the build.

Police are still investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
