DA: 86-year-old man charged in shooting death of 71-year-old woman in Taunton

Police responding to reports of a shooting found the woman in the driveway Sunday night.

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) — A 71-year-old woman has been killed, allegedly by an 86-year-old man, who then barricaded himself inside the home they shared and tried to take his own life, prosecutors said.

Police responding to reports of a shooting at a Taunton home at about 9 p.m. Sunday found the woman in the driveway, according to a statement Monday from the office of Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The suspect went back inside the home.

“As a result, a local regional SWAT team was contacted to establish a secure perimeter while awaiting the arrival of crisis negotiators. Eventually entry was made into the home via a tactical robot, at which point it was determined that the suspect was unconscious,” according to the statement.

He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds to his wrist and neck, authorities said.

The victim and suspect have the same last name but prosecutors did not disclose their relationship.

The suspect remains hospitalized and will be arraigned when he is medically cleared, authorities said.
