77-year-old man struck, killed by tractor trailer in Chelmsford

The exact circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

State police are investigating after a 77-year-old man was struck and killed on Route 3 in Chelmsford on Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers responded to reports of the crash in the northbound lanes near mile marker 84 around 2:15 p.m., state police said in a statement. When they arrived at the scene, they found a 2014 Nissan Rogue disabled in the breakdown lane and a tractor trailer, driven by a 44-year-old Cambridge man, stopped about 300 feet ahead of the SUV.

A 77-year-old man, the driver of the Nissan, was found suffering from serious injuries sustained after being struck by the truck.

Life-saving efforts were attempted, but he died at the scene, police said.

Police said the man was outside his car at the time of the crash.

“The exact cause and circumstances of the crash, including why the Nissan was stopped and why the operator was outside of the vehicle, remain under investigation,” police said.

Two travel lanes were closed for about three hours on Wednesday while crash investigators were at the scene.
