Driver killed in tractor-trailer crash in Mansfield

State troopers responded to the crash on I-495 early Monday morning.

The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed early Monday morning in a crash on I-495 in Mansfield, according to authorities.

State police said troopers responded to the scene around 3:35 a.m. where they discovered the truck crashed about 150 feet into the wood line alongside the southbound lanes of the highway. First responders removed the driver, 55-year-old Peter Fennell of Missouri, from the vehicle and performed CPR, but police said he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that the tractor-trailer driven by Fennell was traveling northbound on I-495 when, for reasons still under investigation by authorities, the truck crossed the median and the three southbound lanes, crashing into the woods.

No other vehicles were involved, according to police.

“The facts and circumstances of the crash, including what caused the operator to lose control of the vehicle, remain under investigation by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit assigned to Bristol County,” police said.
