Authorities have identified Carolyn Sanger as the Topsfield mother of four who died while hiking at the Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton on Wednesday, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
Police received a call that a woman had fallen roughly 50 to 75 feet in the Purgatory Chasm, according to a statement from officials.
The 49-year-old was out hiking with her family, including three of her children, when she fell, police said. Sanger succumbed to her injuries and died shortly after.
“This is currently an active investigation but does appear to be accidental,” the statement said.
A fundraiser for the family has raised over $25,000 as of Thursday.
“For those that knew Carrie, know that she was a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother who has raised four incredible, respectful, responsible kids,” the GoFundMe page reads. “She was a friend to all and her smile and kind spirit will be greatly missed.”
