A former “American Idol’’ runner-up may find himself voted into first place in an arguably more important race.
Clay Aiken is winning North Carolina’s Democratic congressional primary race by a narrow margin against textile entrepreneur Keith Crisco.
Aiken is currently leading by 372 votes, which puts him on track to become the Democratic nominee in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District. However, that number is still too close to declare victory, according to Politico.
Aiken has come in second in just about every other public race he’s entered (see “American Idol’’ and “Celebrity Apprentice’’). Aiken also starred in “Spamalot’’ on Broadway at some point — though we’re not sure how that tidbit fits into what he’s trying to do here.
This time, Aiken has said his primary barrier to moving forward in the political race is his sexual orientation, LGBTQ Nation reported. Aiken, who is from Raleigh, is openly gay and is running in a historically conservative district.
The primary winner will challenge incumbent Republican Renee Ellmers in November’s general election.
