Think “American Idol’’— the 12-year-old singing competition that has featured 11 different judges– has done enough? Think again.
AARP and the 12-year-old television show have teamed up to give Baby Boombers a shot at the title, and you can watch all of their auditions online.
AARP’s “Boomer Superstar Contest’’ targets “American Idol’’ hopefuls between the ages of 50 and 68, as opposed to the show’s most recent age limitations of 15-28. The contest’s website says they are looking for “the kind of voice and presence that’ll have our judges asking, ‘Where have you been all our lives?’’’
Once 30 semi-finalists are selected by a panel of judges, fans will be able to vote for their favorite singer until eight finalists are decided. The AARP contest’s website states: “Finalists in AARP’s Boomer Superstar Contest will compete before a live audience on September 5 at AARP’s Ideas@50+ event in San Diego, CA.’’
As of July 8, the contest’s submission page displayed almost 6,000 entry videos. The winning singer will receive $5,000 and a chance to audition for a music label with 19 Recordings.
