Imagine looking out of a plane’s window during takeoff and seeing an engine catch fire. That’s what happened to a Boston-bound Southwest Airlines flight at Chicago’s Midway International Airport Wednesday night.
Blain Thayer, a passenger on Southwest flight 3299, used social media to shed some humor on an otherwise scary situation:
A fellow passenger captured the flames on video and shared it with Thayer, who then shared it with the world:
In an interview with Boston.com, Thayer described what it was like to be on the plane.
“You go through many emotions in a moment like that with a blast like that. You’re unsure of what’s going on or what’s going to happen,’’ he said.
Takeoff was aborted and all 143 passengers were evacuated safely, according to the airline. An official told the told the Chicago Tribune no one was injured.
Passengers boarded another flight and arrived in Boston around 3:45 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. A call to the airline was not immediately returned.
