On May 25, 2016, a young girl named Elizabeth, of Eaton, Ohio, sent a yellow balloon with a heartfelt message up into the sky.
Her balloon then travelled over 800 miles to Newton, Massachusetts.
Heidi Kern Schwartz found the balloon Tuesday and posted to the Eaton VFW Post’s Facebook page in hopes of finding its sender.
The message to find “Elizabeth,” written on the balloon along with the message, “I love and miss you daddy. Eaton, Ohio. 5-25-16,” was shared over 59,000 times.
Friday morning, the VFW said Elizabeth’s grandmother, Diane Helmig Salisbury, saw the post. She said Elizabeth and her older sister, Isabella, both sent up three balloons to their father, Army Pfc. Gustavo A Rios, who was killed in action in 2011 while serving overseas, the VFW said in a response on its Facebook page.
Elizabeth and her sister send up balloons on their father’s birthday every year. Salisbury told the VFW the girls believe this balloon being found was their father’s way of telling them “he loves and misses them very much.”
