The topic of decriminalizing marijuana in the nation’s capital had Florida Rep. John Mica all fired up on Friday.
On Friday, the Republican congressman was on Capitol Hill and demonstrated his opposition to a bill that recently decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in Washington, D.C., by using a visual aid — a rolled marijuana joint.
Mica, who quickly pointed out that it was not a real joint, was only trying to prove a point, according to Politico.
Mica went on to note that each joint contained about a gram of cannabis -- meaning that the District's new law allowed an individual to possess up to 20 joints without triggering criminal penalties. Civil penalties would still apply.
According to Daily Caller, hilarity ensued:
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) is heard off-microphone asking Mica: "Did you roll that?"
Mica responded: "I had staff do it."
The hearing audience erupted with laughter. "They have more experience.”
D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton was apparently quite taken aback by Mica’s prop.
