Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley made history on Tuesday when she defeated her opponent, 10-term incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano, in the Democratic primary for the 7th District in Massachusetts.
“Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that Massachusetts will be well-served,” Capuano said when he conceded the election before the race was officially called on Tuesday night.
Facing an uncontested general election for the district in November, Pressley, 44, is set to become the first woman of color to serve Massachusetts in Congress.
Here’s how Massachusetts politicians are reacting to Pressley’s stunning victory over Capuano:
Sen. Elizabeth Warren
Rep. Joe Kennedy III
Rep. Katherine Clark
Rep. Seth Moulton
Attorney General Maura Healey
Boston City Council President Andrea Campbell
Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu
Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York congressional candidate
Cynthia Nixon, a Democratic candidate for New York governor
