A truck slammed into a state police SUV, injuring the trooper

The state police trooper who was injured Friday night after his cruiser was hit by a tractor-trailer has been released from the hospital.

Police said the 44 year-old trooper was sitting inside his SUV cruiser with the emergency lights activated on the Mass. Turnpike in Newton, protecting a road construction crew, when he struck from behind by the truck at 9:40 p.m.

The force of the impact pushed the cruiser from the right lane where it was parked across the center and left travel lanes into the median guardrail.

The truck driver, Al B. Hughes, 32, of New Britain, Connecticut, was cited for failure to take care in stopping and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, according to police.
