A sad sight has been greeting residents of Pembroke, New Hampshire, in the new year — a coyote with a plastic jar stuck on its head.

Officials said the state’s Fish and Game Department got calls about the coyote on Saturday and Sunday, and a conservation officer was sent to try and catch the animal to remove the jar.

But as the officer approached, the jar-wearing coyote ran off.

The coyote hasn’t been seen since Sunday, and the hope is that it was able to get the jar off on its own, said Jane Vachon, public information officer for the department.

Vachon said it’s a reminder for people to be mindful of how they store used food receptacles since animals “really can get themselves in a bind’’ with the discarded materials.

The state’s wildlife agency is asking anyone who sees the coyote to contact the department.
