The Fitchburg Fire Department embarked on an unusual rescue mission Monday — catch the two swans and three ducks on Mirror Lake.

Each year with assistance from the Department of Public Works, Fitchburg firefighters catch the birds that were purchased by the city for Coggshall Park to prevent them from being eaten by foxes and coyotes as the water freezes over. The swans and ducks spend the winter at a farm until spring, the department explained on Facebook.

The duck and swan chase has another benefit.

“It is [a] great way to train with the water rescue suits and the rescue sled,’’ the department wrote.
