Doherty High doesn’t have much time to prepare to face Wachusett Regional, and Tuesday night the Highlanders may have been guilty of trying to get a head start before completing the task at hand. The Highlanders, the No. 7 seed, led by 22 points heading into the fourth quarter, but needed to hold on as No. 10 Burncoat High cut the lead down to four points with 30 seconds left before Doherty escaped with a 63-58 win in a Central Mass. Division 1 Tournament first-round game at North High. Doherty (13-6) will travel to Wachusett to meet the No. 2 Mountaineers at 7 p.m. Thursday. Burncoat finished 12-9. “Burncoat called a timeout with about four minutes left, and one of our assistant coaches, Trevor Gray, was telling our kids that the game wasn’t over,” said Doherty coach Jermaine Chavis, whose team led, 53-31 after three quarters. “Burncoat is far too good and too tough to play the way we did in the fourth quarter, and they almost made us pay for it.”
