Blackstone-Millville 61, Auburn 48

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Auburn

Figuring out who was going to be the victor of Tuesday night's Central Mass. Division 2 boys basketball first round matchup between Blackstone-Millville and Auburn was anybody's guess, as both teams stayed even well into the third quarter. Then BMR senior Kevin Gautreau took over, and that was that. Gautreau's 10 consecutive points and brilliant defensive play sparked a 14-0 Chargers run that enabled No. 12 BMR to run away with a 61-48 win over the fifth seeded Rockets. Clinging to a 28-27 lead with 5:19 left in the third quarter, Gautreau started things off with a turnaround banker and two free throws, then teamed with Aaron Staples on the play that enabled the Chargers to break things wide open. Gautreau and Staples both dove to the floor to recover a loose ball, with Staples recovering and firing a quick feed to Gautreau for the breakaway bucket with 3:55 left. Two more free throws and a short jumper later, Gautreau and the Chargers held a 42-27 lead that they would never relinquish.
