It is only fitting for St. Marys that Alison Butler would score the winning goal and earn the Spartans their fifth MIAA state championship Sunday at TD Garden. The 2-1 victory over Arlington Catholic avenged a 3-1 upset in last years Division 1 state final to the Cougars and hands St. Marys the record for most state championships with their last one in 2010. With 2:46 left in the third period and the score tied 1-1, Butler slipped one past Arlington Catholic goalie Megan Messuri to give the Spartans the win. Amanda Donahoe was credited with the assist. The goal, Butlers 36th this season, ends the St. Anselm commits career with 199 points. The first goal came with 22.8 seconds remaining in the first period after a power play expired when Spartans senior forward Gabby Crugnale (16 goals, 10 assists) snapped a wrist shot to the back of the net to lead 1-0. Eighth grade forward/defenseman Sarah Ryan had the assist.
