The look on the faces of the Milford boys’ volleyball team said it all. Lucas Bentes sat alone on the bench with tears in his eyes. Michael Soares shed a few tears, too, while the state runner-up medal was draped around his neck. For the second straight year, the Scarlet Hawks finished their season with a crushing defeat in the state final. Last spring, it was a 3-2 loss to Cambridge. Wednesday night, the Central Mass. champs fell to Agawam, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23, at Babson College. “It’s really disappointing because I thought being here last year, and then again this year, we have a little bit of an advantage, but it didn’t happen that way,” Milford coach Linda Zacchilli said after the Scarlet Hawks finished their season 21-2. When Sawyer Frederick (28 kills) blasted a spike on match point that set off a wild celebration by Agawam (22-2), Milford could only think about what might have been. The Scarlet Hawks squandered big leads in both the third and fourth sets. “They had some tremendous players, some unstoppable players, we couldn’t stop them I guess,” captain Tim MacMannis said after recording 42 assists.
