St. Bernard’s 22, Clinton 20

Friday, Sep. 13, 2013, at Clinton

Just after 7 p.m. Friday night, Sean Maki took his first snap as a varsity quarterback. About two hours later, when it mattered most, the St. Bernard’s High senior played with the poise of a four-year starter. Led by a strong second half from Maki, the visiting Bernardians outlasted Clinton High, 22-20, in overtime at Veterans’ Athletic Complex in the season-opener for both teams. Clinton got the ball first in overtime and promptly jumped ahead on Tom Russell’s 1-yard rush, but came up short on the conversion rush attempt. St. Bernard’s tied it on Maki’s 1-yard keeper and won the game when fullback Adam Hyde crashed through for the conversion rush. “Sean is a pretty gifted kid,” St. Bernard’s coach Tom Bingham said of Maki, who on several occasions turned broken plays or potential sacks into positive yardage. “It’s been a long preseason, and I thought there was enough back and forth and drama in this game for two or three weeks.”
