Playing catch-up against a four-time defending state champion can be daunting. Auburn’s field hockey team, fueled by aspirations to finish with bang in Saturday’s Division 2 state final against Watertown, can vouch for that. The Raiders struck quickly, getting a goal from Mikayla Paone midway through the first half. Watertown then kept the Rockets on the defensive for the rest of the session and weathered repeated Auburn threats over the final 30 minutes, in the end hanging on to claim a 1-0 win at WPI. The championship was Watertown’s fifth straight and enabled the Raiders to finish 23-0, the second straight season Watertown has finished unbeaten and untied. In addition, the Raiders’ standout defensive effort against the Rockets was basically a continuation of a good thing since Watertown blanked Dover-Sherborn in a state semifinal, 4-0.
