Doherty 22, Wahconah 16

Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Worcester

There were facts and opinions leading up to Saturdayís Division 4 state semifinal game between Wahconah Regional and Doherty High. The fact was the Warriors entered the game undefeated, but prevailing opinion was they hadnít seen a team quite like the Highlanders this year. That theory was proven correct ó sort of. Doherty was thought to be more athletic at the skill positions and that was proven correct, but what separated the Highlanders was poise. After falling behind, 16-0, early, Doherty rallied for a 22-16 victory over the Warriors. The Highlanders, who last won a football championship more than 30 years ago (the 1980 Central Mass. Super Bowl), will play for all the marbles on the big stage, Saturday Dec. 7, when they meet Dennis-Yarmouth (9-2) for the state title at a time to be determined at Gillette Stadium.
