St. Peter Marian employed a trap defense to bottle up an inexperienced Burncoat squad in the first half and cruised to victory in the season opener for both teams. The athletic Guardians swarmed the Patriots’ ball handlers along the sidelines to create turmoil and a bevy of turnovers in the first half as they built a 35-18 lead at the break.“I think a lot of the mistakes we made tonight against St. Peter Marian’s pressure were unforced turnovers,” Burncoat coach Ryan Connor said. “Those are just inexperience turnovers. But, we’re going to continue to work hard every single day in practice and take care of some of those mistakes.” The stifling defense prevented the Patriots from effectively moving the ball up the middle of the floor and limited 6-foot-5 senior Zehmir Brown to just 11 points.
